With very few exceptions, any type of fishing in the state of Louisiana requires a license. However, getting yours has never been easier or more affordable. In fact, it can be purchased online via your phone from the dock mere minutes before we hit the water.

The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has something called a Charter Passenger License. This is a 3-day license that costs $10. Anyone fishing from a charter vessel in saltwater areas of the state, with a licensed guide on board, can get one for three days of legal, carefree fishing.

You also have plenty of options to get that license. They’re available at any Louisiana Wal-Mart or sporting goods store, by calling 1-888-765-2602 or online. If you purchase your license online, it can be printed out and folded up in your wallet or saved to your phone as a PDF (which we recommend because it’s simply much easier). Keep in mind there is a state-mandated service fee when buying online or over the phone.

The license must be with you during the trip. Anyone over the age of 16 needs a license; anyone younger that 16 doesn’t need one at all. Licenses are not transferable, either. No, we didn’t make the rules but we do follow them.
